January Book Club - The Hate U Give

For our January Book Club, we are excited to read The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. It follows events in the life of a 16-year-old black girl, Starr Carter, who is drawn to activism after she witnesses the police shooting of a childhood friend. Published on February 28, 2017 by Balzer + Bray, The Hate U Give debuted at number one on The New York Times young adult best-seller list, where it remained for 50 weeks. It received positive reviews and won several awards. It is Thomas' debut novel, expanded from a short story she wrote in college following the police shooting of Oscar Grant.

Readers Resist Book Club

Readers Resist is kicking off 2019 with the book Doing Harm: The Truth about How Bad Medicine and Lazy Science Leave Women Dismissed, Misdiagnosed, and Sick. We are Readers Resist. We read a different book each month, and we meet once a month in the Detroit/Metro Detroit area to discuss each reading and the larger themes it presents to our consciousness. We strive to meet only in spaces that are owned by or support women, women of color, and members of the LGBTQ community. You do NOT have to own or finish the book to participate in the conversation. We welcome anyone into our discussion as long as they respect our mission.

Book Suey Storytelling Series

Before the written word, history, story, poetry, all were delegated by an oral medium. To keep this tradition alive, Book Suey is introducing the Storytelling Series: a platform for writers, authors and readers to engage their story in an intimate setting with an audience. Our Storytelling Series brings back the oldest form of storytelling using verbal medium. Before the written word, before the novel, everything was expressed by the voice. With each Storytelling Series event, Book Suey will present a local writer/author to speak, to tell us a story, invite us to experience a piece of their world, their vision--- illuminating something we were unable to see before.
