Working our way back

Friends,

We’re feeling grateful.

Despite a fraught, frightening year—one where we couldn’t invite you in the shop to browse, host local authors for readings, or just sit around and talk books with friends over coffee—we managed to pay the bills and keep our little community bookstore going.

And it’s thanks entirely to you.

Your email requests, curbside pickups, and online orders through Bookshop sustained us. And we can’t thank you enough. (Read in Hour Detroit about how you helped us and other local bookshops survive the last year.)

And now things are looking up!

As our team becomes vaccine-eligible, and as the weather warms enough so we can open doors to keep air flowing, we will begin to offer more in-store shopping opportunities—and eventually some in-store events.

Until then, there are still three easy ways for you to get the books you need from Book Suey:

  1. Place an order by email! Just write to us at info@booksuey.com with a list of titles you desire. Select from our inventory or just tell us what you want us to order. We'll let you know when we have your books in stock, then you can either stop by the shop Wednesdays from 6-9 p.m. or Saturdays from noon-6 p.m. for curbside pickup. Can’t make it down? We can personally drop off your order at your house if you live in Metro Detroit.
  1. Shop through our Bookshop portal and have books shipped directly to your home. When you purchase items through our portal, we receive 30 percent of the proceeds, and other independent bookstores get a cut, too. Visit https://bookshop.org/shop/booksuey to get started.
  1. Check out an online author event. We’re hosting our first online local author event on Saturday, March 27, with Riley Arthur, an award-winning, Michigan-based photographer who will be discussing her first book, Phone Photography for Everybody. Riley will share pointers on how to take better shots and insights on the process of getting a book published. To register, click here. To order a copy of Riley’s book, email us at info@booksuey.com.

It’s going to be a good spring and a great summer!
